Computer contingency plan?
Does anyone know a company that provides a kind of ‘computer emergency contingency plan’ that would help me get back up and running (small business) if my computer died all of a sudden. Presently I have norton anti-virus with a firewall and anti-spyware etc. I also have online back-up so i feel reasonably secure but what if the worst happens: I know I should have an ‘image’ of the computer so that i could reinstate things but I wondered if any companies have already got something as a ready-to-buy service/product with all thats necessary ready-arranged. I am not any kind of IT expert and I would rather do that than do it myself and hope it will be ok in the event of a catastrophe.
Have a look on line at Disaster Recovery solutions. Lots out there but usually for Medium/Large/Enterprise companies.
But there should be some about for disaster recovery.

Not sure who you would contact but a company I used to work for in Nottingham used to offer a ’1st Class’ support service that would do what you want, (it used to be based on a fraction of the equipment you wanted covered) it was quiet costly, you would be better speaking to a computer company about a raid back up (it copies your work as you create it) and if your PC completely fails go buy another, service contracts at this level are cost prohibitive unless you are a large corporate

do what that other guy said. Just keep in mind that you can erase your hard drive, bang it up with a hammer, or whatever else, but there will always be a company out there that can help you recover that lost data ie. digital-autopsy.net
So there really is no worst case scenario. I don’t even think a fire will properly destroy your data, but don’t take my word for it.

The easiest (and very effective) way to backup your computer is to have a second, laptop hard drive with one of those linking devices that lets you just download onto it like any kind of disk.
You can set up with a warranteed laptop hard drive (probably around 100 USD), and a connector (probably around 10 USD).
Then you can just plug that into your computer (or ANY computer with a USB port), and you’ve got access to all your information and most of your executables. If you update regularly (small updates weekly, perhaps Sunday… a larger ‘pruning session’ every month or so, and maybe a total review each year, defragmenting the portable disk just to make sure)… well, your data is gonna be nigh invincible.
I sleep very well at night when I have my data backed up that way. I keep a separate computer that I never use… it just sits silently in its case, waiting to be invoked if something really bad happens. I can download my data to it in about an hour, and lose at most a week’s worth of work.
Not horrendous. Also not complicated. And pretty cheap, for what you get.
Also, to make sure prying eyes don’t have access, you can use Kruptos to encrypt the entire drive. It’s very good.
That’s all I’ve got. Hope that helps.
