What are your preferred non secular cop-outs?
Issue by Ample Nonsense: What are your preferred spiritual cop-outs?
My personal top three (not essentially listed in order of private choice):
one) “Cost-free will.” Ask a Christian about the atrocities of Hitler, Stalin, and Mao and this is the response that you will probably get. By no means thoughts that an omniscient, omnipotent God could have prevented Hitler, Stalin, and Mao from current in the initial spot. Also, it hardly accounts for all the organic disasters, famines, conditions, etc., that have wrecked or destroyed billions of lives.
2) “God’s Program.” This is genuinely a non-rationalization. A religious person would be much more honest if he simply explained, “I’m sorry. I can’t clarify that.” What type of “Prepare” has more than twenty,000 kids starving to death each and every simple day? Looks like an omniscient, omnipotent Being could do much better than that. Additionally, this idea renders petitional prayers ineffective — unless one particular has the audacity to feel that he can persuade God to alter the divine Plan.
three) “We are not able to know the brain of God.” This is occasionally invoked when a skeptic asks a hard issue, presenting a logic trap from which there is no obvious rational escape (faith is never at a loss for logic traps). It is essentially yet another non-rationalization. And it usually comes from people who declare to know all about “the mind of God” concerning matters such as premarital intercourse, homosexuality, abortion, and so on. They can chat to you for hours about all of God’s likes and dislikes. Throw something demanding at them, nonetheless, and they all of a sudden fake not to know nearly anything.
Honorable mention: “The Bible is God’s Word simply because the Bible states so.”
What are your favorites?
P.S.: Even though this query will without doubt appear antagonistic to the devoted, it is not meant as this sort of. I am in fact attempting to aid them. They must know what form of statements to stay away from in discussions with non-non secular folks.
donnad: I never ever use the phrases that you listed (notice that I did not say “buybull” in the “honorable mention”). I do not use them due to the fact they do not constitute realistic arguments.
Lexis: This question does not apply to all religious individuals. But I listen to these varieties of remarks so often that they desire a counter-argument.
Pastors George and Sharon: I will respect you as individuals until you show yourselves unworthy of it. However, I do not respect Christianity. It is a creed that promises that I am a hopeless sinner that deserves eternal torment in Hell. Why ought to I respect a perception system that retains me in this kind of miserably low regard? Clarify that and you will deserve a prize of some type.

“Look around you. All this is proof of God!”
My favorite (or least favorite, depending on your point of view) is “God won’t give you anything you can’t handle.”
So stupid. If this is true, why are so many people on anti-depressants, committing suicide, and having panic attacks and nervous breakdowns?
.
“Everything need a maker. So the Universe needs a maker, so god exists. Oh, of course God doesn’t need a maker, he’s just that awesome!”
Faulty logic is faulty.
How about “It’s a result of sin?”
The Looooord works in mysterious wayyyyys..
My favorite inane expressions from atheists are
buy bull
jeebus
sky daddy
Avoid them. They make you look like total jerks.
I am a christian.. and i have never had to say these things you say that religious people say when asked those questions.. dont blame all christians or religious people for something only some religious people do…
P.S. Thanks for the thought, but we really don’t need your help. What we need is your respect that we know that we know what we know and Who showed it to us. We’ve said it many times before, but our relationship with God is spiritual and until one is filled with and led by God the Holy Spirit, it’s impossible to understand spiritual things. Your reference is physical. Let’s agree to disagree and leave it at that.
@asker: We’re glad you at least respect us as people. Regarding what you’ve been exposed to regarding God’s way of life and love, we believe you’ve been misled by sincerely wrong people who don’t truly have a relationship with God and know Him and love Him for who and what He is. Believe us when we say that there is no mention of eternal punishment in scripture, but there is a fate for those that know better and have deliberately chosen to go their own way and spite God. For them, that fate is the lake of fire, which scripture says burns eternally. They will be burned up when they are thrown in there, and will thus face eternal death.
We are very distressed at those who call themselves Christian who attempt to browbeat people into becoming Christians by threatening them with eternal punishment and torture or other awful things. We are not surprised many recoil as you have. The fact and truth is that God is love, He created us to love us and be in relationship with us and He waits for us to choose to love and be in relationship with Him in return. If you have more questions, please feel free to email us privately, and we’ll be glad to answer as God the Holy Spirit leads.
“jesus loves you”
this is most annoying when said in a tone that makes you expect the word “anyway” to be tacked onto the end.
“i’m blessed”.
this one is said to me a lot by someone whose life has been horribly messed up for years. i guess it could be seen as optimism, but this woman complains to me a lot about many of her personal problems, so maybe she’s just trying to convince herself.
“i guess god just has another plan”
oh, well . . .
“who woke you up this morning?”
this is almost always asked of me when someone finds out i’m an atheist.
